This story is personal to me.  I lived in this town when I worked in Connecticut 25 years ago.  I drove past the Sandy Hook Elementary school going to and from work every day.

3:50 Update:  State Police in Connecticut hve just held a news conference.   20 children were killed in one class room.   Six adults were killed in the school.  The shooting took place in two rooms.   You can infer one room was the school office where people including the principal and others died, and then his mothers class room.

Someone in that school office heroically flipped on the school intercom and the entire school heard screaming, arguing and cursing.  That gave teachers a chance to baricade thier children in their rooms.

There is another murder scene in Newtown where the suspect lived, and a person is dead inside that home.   State Police will answer more questions at quarter to five.

Here is what happened.

A man from the Sandy Hook, Connecticut area, 24 year old Ryan or Adam Lanza has been named as the killer.  His murdered his father in New Jersey and then drove to Sandy Hook where his mother worked as a kindergarten teacher at the elementary school.

He went into the school around 9:30 this morning and got into an argument with the principal and shot her.  Then Lanza went on a rampage in the school.   18 children between kindergarten and the 4th grade were killed along with 8 other adults.

CBS News says many of the victims are his mothers kindergarten students.

Lanza shot and killed himself.

He was armed with two semi automatic handguns and had many many reloads.

In Connecticut there is no formal county government.  There are something like 248 towns, and some towns are broken into communities.  Sandy Hook is one of five boroughs in the town of Newtown.

President Obama spoke to the nation at 3:15 this afternoon.  He wiped way tears as he talked about all the children who were killed today.

More: Police have arrested or taken into custody the brother of shooter.

From Reese:  Sandy Hook is simply a lovely little New England Community.   It was the kind of little New England town you dream about.   There is a small river running through the center of town and a mill pond dating back to the 18 hundreds when water power ran the old textile mill.
