Good Morning Listener Family. I will update here, the events in suburban Boston last night, the latest developments this morning, and then look at what's next. ---- Reese
Many of us spent Friday watching the television coverage from Boston. By six pm, police had concluded the door to door search of a 20 block area. There was no sign of suspect # 2
What happened was this....
The suspect, as we know now, had been in a gun battle with police early Friday morning. He was hit and wounded. He drove his stolen Mercedes through a police line, then a couple of blocks away, ditched it, and ran. Police knew he was hurt because of the blood in the car. A short distance away they found blood again behind a home. They used that home as the center of the search. But he ran one block further than police imagined. He spotted a small cabin cruiser on a trailer in a back yard. It was covered in thick winter shrink wrap. He cut his way in, and hunkered down for the rest of the day. Exhausted, wounded and loosing blood, secure in a cuddy cabin, he probably slept. Meantime the residents of Watertown were told to stay in their homes and don't come out.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE BOAT OWNERS DID
Around 6pm the police gave up. There was no sign of the suspect, and people started saying, "Well he must of gotten away in the early morning darkness. Even police said they hadn't ringed in the area soon enough.
The citizens of Boston and the suburbs were told it was ok to go outside again. That's what the owner of the boat did. They went outside for a cigarette and a breath of fresh air. He saw straps cut on his boat, and blood like something had climbed in. He peeked and saw the suspect covered in blood. He immediately went back inside and called 911.
JUST BEFORE 7PM COPS RUSHED BACK INTO THE AREA
Still in the boat, the suspect peeked out, saw the police and took a shot at them. They returned heavy fire. A police helicopter was called in. The helicopter was equiped with forward looking infared technology, and that camera could see through the shrink wrap on the boat. After period of time, a police negociator was able to determine the suspect was no longer a threat, and he was taken into custody.
He was given first aid, and then rushed to Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for treatment. He remains there this morning in serious condition, but there is no reason to think he will won't make it.
The federal prosecutor was asked last night if she would seek the death penalty? She said that decision was along way off, and in any case, that call will be made by the Attorney General Eric Holder. But there is no question, there will be a federal, as opposed to a state or local trial.
When Timothy McVeigh was convicted of the Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing, he was sent to a federal prison in Indiana to be executed. Since then, Super Max has been built in Colorado. That is little doubt the bomber will spend the rest of his life there. We just don't know how long that life will be.
But what was suspect #2's real intent...
He is a picture of him on Monday. Along the metal railing is the little boy he will be accused of killing. The little girl to his left lost a leg, and his Mom, suffered a brain injury...
He allegedly put the bomb down right behind them.
